Planning your first trip to Italy? Whether you’re sipping espresso in Rome or exploring the Tuscan countryside, knowing a few key Italian phrases can make a huge difference. Not only will locals appreciate the effort, but you’ll also feel more confident navigating shops, restaurants, and everyday interactions.
Here are 10 beginner-friendly phrases to help you get started:
1. Buongiorno – Good morning / Hello
Use this during the day to greet people politely. It’s one of the most common (and appreciated) ways to say hello.
🗣 "Buongiorno, un cappuccino per favore."
(Good morning, a cappuccino please.)
2. Buonasera – Good evening
Switch to this from late afternoon onwards.
🗣 "Buonasera, avete un tavolo per due?"
(Good evening, do you have a table for two?)
3. Per favore / Grazie / Prego – Please / Thank you / You’re welcome
Politeness goes a long way. These three little words are essential.
4. Mi scusi – Excuse me
Use this to get someone’s attention or if you bump into someone by accident.
🗣 "Mi scusi, dov’è il bagno?"
(Excuse me, where is the bathroom?)
5. Parla inglese? – Do you speak English?
A polite way to ask before switching languages (if you must!).
6. Non capisco – I don’t understand
Simple and effective when you’re feeling a bit lost in translation.
7. Quanto costa? – How much does it cost?
Perfect for market stalls, shops, or when eyeing up that irresistible gelato.
8. Vorrei... – I would like...
A handy phrase for ordering food, drinks or asking for help.
🗣 "Vorrei un biglietto per Firenze."
(I’d like a ticket to Florence.)
9. Dov’è…? – Where is…?
Fill in the blank with places like the station (la stazione), bathroom (il bagno), or hotel (l’albergo).
10. Aiuto! – Help!
Hopefully you won’t need this one, but it’s good to know.
Bonus Tip: Smile and speak slowly
Even if you get the words slightly wrong, your effort will be warmly received. Italians are often delighted when visitors try to speak their language—even a little goes a long way!
